The Victoria hotel is situated in the heart of Portknockie; which still retains many of the features and charm of its fishing heritage days. It is a conservation area with over 1,200 residents. The older part of the village overlooks the harbour and features traditional single storey stone houses in north-south rows. In late Victorian times increased prosperity from the herring fishing led to the construction of larger houses with dormer windows and lofts for the storage of nets and gear. The cliff top path offers spectacular views over the Moray Firth with its busy traffic of fishing boats, oil rigs, cruise liners and passing bottle-nose dolphins.
